Laid back, humble, sociable, down to earth, clever, easy going, charismatic and creative are some but not all of the words that can be used to describe this determined young lady by the name of Candi Redd.
As if entering the world on the last day of the year, Wednesday, December 31, 1986 12:00pm (New Years Eve) doesn’t already make her unique enough, she received the nickname, REDD, from her family because she was the only person in her family born with bright sandy red hair.
Growing up in a broken home on the southwest side of Houston, TX, with her mother and younger sister, Candi Redd encountered and overcame many obstacles at a very young age. Teen pregnancy, drug addiction, jail time and an abusive relationship are a few of many issues. Impressively through it all, the ambitious song writer and recording artist efficiently provided for her son and never gave up on her dreams.
Working as a full time operations supervisor for a Bank of America vendor 2007-2008, Candi Redd spent days at work, evenings with her son and sleepless nights in the studio. “Maaan! Soon as my project was finish and I had a solid single (Independent Bitches), I wanted to put all my time into promoting my music,” says Candi Redd.
The brave entertainer went on an impulse and followed her heart. With rent, lights, phone, day care bills and more due, she quit a good paying job with benefits to pursue her dream full time. “I was still able to pay my bills. I told myself that if I got up and hit the block 7am-6pm with my mixtapes and set a quota of $100 per day I would be fine. That way I could make my own schedule and get paid to promote myself,” was the intelligent young lady’s reply when asked why on earth she would quit working without a back up plan or savings for the remaining month in her apartment. Candi Redd said, “It just felt so right. My mom and Aunt was pissed but they just didn’t understand and I didn’t expect them to but I could show them way better than I could tell them.”
2008 she hit the night clubs extremely hard promoting her certified club banger, female anthem and undeniable hit, “Independent Bitches.” Beginning in Houston, then branching out to Dallas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Austin, San Antonio and so forth, without her own car, Candi Redd laid a foundation in the streets so strong, that here we are in 2011 and this record is still being played. Every time this record is dropped women knock people over to get up on the dance floor and work Lol. The female lyricist has a story out of this world to tell and can tell it while making you dance simultaneously yet is so much more than just club music.
Leaving her footprints around the industry working with the legendary Bun B of UGK, Lil Keke, Lil O, BET award Nominee Rasheeda, Kandi Burress of Xcape & Real Housewives of Atlanta, E Class, Webbie, Just Brittany, Kat St. John and more, all of the artist she has worked with have nothing but great things to say about the dedicated artist. “I don’t even listen to female rappers like that, but f#### with that Candi Redd,” says Houston rapper Lil Keke.
Ms. Candi Redd is like a breath of fresh air in the industry and one of the best females to ever enter the game hands down and has been one of the first female artist to hit billboard in a very long time.
The 2010 S.E.A. award winning mixtape, CODE REDD is available everywhere music is sold online right now with the Hit Single, “Independent Bitches,” the crowed favorites “iLL” & “Cigarillo,” and the fierce female shoe anthem “Stiletto Stomp.”
Nominated again this year, Candi Redd has a new hit single, “Act A Azz,” produced by: Gavin Luckett (Brother of Letoya Luckett) from her new project, REDD ALERT which is available in stores and everywhere online right now!!!
Laying down the blue print for the other female independent artist, representing in a major way for the young mothers, women in hip hop and holding it down for Houston, TX, it wouldn’t be wise to sleep on Ms. Independent because you will definitely hear and see a lot of her in the future. |
